Police cleared in fatal 2025 sword attack shooting

The New York State Attorney General's office has cleared the officers involved in the June 2025 shooting death of a man who attacked Dutchess County Mobile Crisis Team workers with a sword.

The incident happened on June 5, 2025, on Fair Oaks Drive in the Town of Poughkeepsie. Officers responded after the man slashed a crisis worker's hand and continued to advance with the sword. Officers shot and killed him. Under state law, the AG's office investigates all officer-involved fatalities, and its review found the officers' actions legally justified.

75 MPH in a school zone. In a school zone.

City of Poughkeepsie police clocked drivers going 75 and 71 miles per hour near an elementary school this week. The department's Traffic Safety Unit announced the stops on social media as part of an ongoing crackdown around schools.

The context here is grim. A bill allowing school-zone speed cameras in Poughkeepsie, sponsored by State Senator Rob Rolison following the death of a crossing guard, has passed. The cameras just aren't installed yet. For now, Kingston remains the only Hudson Valley municipality with the technology in place.
