Dutchess County
A death on State Route 9G in the Town of Rhinebeck is now under investigation by the New York State Attorney General's Office, according to a release from the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office dated October 23, 2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:40 pm on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Earlier that morning, at approximately 11:45 am, law enforcement received a report of an armed suicidal person traveling through northern Dutchess County. Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on Route 9G just south of its intersection with Route 9 in Rhinebeck.
During the stop, as law enforcement was attempting to establish a dialogue with the operator and check on his welfare, the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Sheriff's Office stated there is no indication at this time that any law enforcement force was used or contributed to the death. The description of events is preliminary and the investigation remains ongoing. The identity of the deceased has not been released; no name, age, or hometown has been made public. Additional information may be released at a later date.
Because law enforcement was present at the scene, the New York State Attorney General's Office was notified, as required by New York State law. The Attorney General's Office is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, the New York State Police, and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner.
This item resolves the question left open in Thursday's blotter: Route 9G was reported closed in the area that afternoon, but the nature of the incident had not been released at that time.

Charges are accusations; defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This is the only verified item in Friday evening's blotter check. The Sheriff's Office release dated October 23, 2026, is the newest entry on the agency's 2026 release index. No release dated October 23 was found from the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, the Hyde Park Police Department, the Beacon Police Department, the Fishkill Police Department, the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office, or New York State Police Troop K covering Dutchess County.
