Dutchess County's public-safety agencies released nothing new Saturday by press time. A Beacon arrest from earlier in the week surfaced through a local report, New York City police charged a man in a waterfront stabbing that ended a week of searching, and county veterans gathered in Hyde Park for the annual appreciation day.

Weapon Cache and Drug Charges in Beacon

Beacon police arrested Harold Gaines, 41, of Newburgh on Monday, Nov. 2, after responding to a 911 call in which a dispatcher heard screaming. Officers arrived at a Pleasant View Avenue address and found him with several knives, and determined he had an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the City Court. Police said he had 15 knives, a small crossbow, a blow torch, $1,611 in cash, a large quantity of methamphetamine and a smaller quantity of cocaine. He was charged with felony and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, arraigned in City Court, and sent to Dutchess County jail without bail. Brooklyn Jogger Killing: Arrest Made After Week-Long Search

New York City police charged Sayed Mohassib, 27, Saturday with second-degree murder in the Oct. 30 stabbing of Katie Suarez, 28, on the Shore Parkway Greenway in Brooklyn. Suarez was stabbed in the neck around 8:15 p.m. as she left her job at TD Bank in Gravesend and jogged on the waterfront near Bay 17th Street and the Belt Parkway.

Officers tracked Mohassib to his Bensonhurst home after picking him up on video leaving the Greenway around the time of the attack. Police sources told the New York Post he claimed he woke up covered in blood with no memory of the attack, and that he ditched the knife in the garbage; police believe the trash went to a Staten Island landfill and then to a New Jersey dump.

He served six weeks with the NYPD in 2022 before the Marines deemed him mentally unfit. At the time of the killing, he worked as a paraprofessional at PS 200 in Bath Beach. He returned to the school in the days after the attack. Colleagues reported erratic and incoherent behavior to police, though sources said those reports did not lead directly to his arrest. No motive has been determined. The city's Department of Education suspended him and is moving to terminate his employment.

Mohassib walked out of the 62nd Precinct around 4 p.m. Saturday and awaits arraignment. He also faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence. Source: New York Post
