Two stories with long fuses finally went off in Dutchess County on Friday and Saturday. The rest of the overnight was a standard mix of arrests and incidents. Here's everything that moved.
AG closes the Czornyj case
New York Attorney General Letitia James' Office of Special Investigation released its report Friday: no charges for Town of Poughkeepsie Officer John Gouger in the June 5, 2025 fatal shooting of Brian Czornyj. The report found that Czornyj advanced on officers armed with a sword. The Poughkeepsie Journal covered the release the same day under the headline "No charges for cop who shot, killed man armed with a sword."
The AG's office investigates every police-involved death in New York. A no-charge finding closes the case at the state level. The shooting happened 16 months ago; the investigation's conclusion will be the last official word on it.
Legislature moves to shut down ARCTIC
The Dutchess County Legislature's Public Safety Committee is pushing to end the county's real-time crime center, known as ARCTIC, by ordering the remaining Flock Safety cameras removed or covered immediately. Mid-Hudson News reported Saturday that the move is being characterized as abrupt even by those driving it.
The Flock network and ARCTIC have been contested ground in Dutchess County for some time. This looks like the endgame.
