Thruway Maintenance Worker Killed in I-287 Crash, White Plains

Jamil Wilson, 47, of White Plains, a New York State Thruway maintenance worker, was killed Monday, October 19, 2026, in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 287 westbound near Exit 6 in White Plains, the Cross Westchester Expressway. Wilson and a crew were mowing along the highway as part of maintenance work when the crash occurred, according to State Police. Other crew members were not injured.

The crash initially blocked the right and center lanes and closed the Exit 6 entrance ramp. All lanes have since reopened, State Police reported.

Wilson worked in the Thruway Authority's Cross Westchester Expressway Maintenance Section. He had been with the Authority for nearly six years and is survived by his partner and two children.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement: "This is a tragic reminder that the safety of the employees who maintain our roads is the responsibility of every member of the driving public. No employee should come to work and not return home safely."

Thruway Executive Director Frank Hoare said in a statement Tuesday: "Roadside workers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of all drivers on the road, and Jamil embodied that very dedication and commitment."
