Friday closed out with a full public-safety ledger in Dutchess County. A drug arrest capped months of intelligence-driven investigation on the South Side of Poughkeepsie. A parking-lot accident at a Taconic State Parkway rest stop sent two pedestrians and the driver to the hospital. News arrived from across the Hudson of a woman killed in a head-on collision two days earlier. And as darkness settled in, Mischief Night curfews activated in several towns, with Halloween itself still a day away.

Drug Task Force Arrests Poughkeepsie Man on Felony Narcotics Charges

Agents from the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office Drug Task Force arrested Christopher Brown, 45, on Thursday, October 29, following what they describe as a months-long investigation targeting alleged narcotic sales on the South Side of the City of Poughkeepsie.

According to a release from the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, task force agents identified Brown selling narcotics at various locations throughout the city and made multiple purchases of narcotics from him over the course of several months. The arrest came on Barclay Street as Brown exited an apartment building. Agents say he had cocaine packaged for sale on him at the time.

Brown faces two felony charges: Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a class B felony, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fourth Degree, a class C felony. He was arraigned in City of Poughkeepsie Court and remanded without bail to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center, formerly known as the Dutchess County Jail, as required by New York State law. The sheriff's office release notes that numerous other charges related to narcotic sales are also pending against him.

District Attorney Anthony Parisi released a statement following the arrest: "The illegal distribution of narcotics continues to pose a serious threat to the safety and well-being of our communities. This arrest reflects the persistent, intelligence-driven work of our Drug Task Force to identify and investigate those allegedly engaged in distributing dangerous drugs in our neighborhoods. We remain committed to working with our law enforcement partners to disrupt illegal drug trafficking, hold offenders accountable, and protect the residents of Dutchess County."

Two Pedestrians Hospitalized After Driver Strikes Them at Taconic Rest Stop

A Friday afternoon incident at a Taconic State Parkway rest area put three people in the hospital, according to the New York State Police, Troop K.

Troopers were dispatched at approximately 2:20 p.m. to the Taste of New York rest area at mile marker 46.6 on the Taconic State Parkway in the Town of LaGrange, for a report of a personal injury motor vehicle collision involving pedestrians. A preliminary investigation found that a 2014 Subaru operated by Charles W. Schaubhut, 84, of Hudson, New York, was attempting to pull into a parking space when Schaubhut accelerated. The vehicle traveled over the curb and onto the sidewalk, striking two pedestrians, ages 67 and 71, both of Hillsdale, New York.

All three were transported to local hospitals. Injuries for each were described as believed to be non-life-threatening. The two pedestrians were not named in the state police release, and the hospitals were not identified. No charges were announced as of the release. State Police described the investigation as preliminary. (Source: New York State Police)

Witnesses Sought After Fatal Head-On Crash in Greene County

This item comes from across the Hudson and north of Dutchess, in Greene County, where state police are asking witnesses to come forward after a Coxsackie woman was killed in a head-on collision Wednesday morning.

On October 28, around 10:30 a.m., troopers from SP Coxsackie and SP Catskill, along with members of the Catskill Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Troop F Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of County Route 51 and State Route 9W in the Town of New Baltimore, according to reporting by Hudson Valley Country citing state police.

A 2023 Nissan Altima driven by Lenore M. Nevins, 50, of Coxsackie, was traveling on County Route 51. Nevins attempted a left turn onto State Route 9W to travel northbound. The Nissan entered the southbound lane and struck a southbound 2016 Hino commercial box truck head-on. Nevins was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in critical condition and was later pronounced deceased. Emergency medical personnel treated the box truck's operator at the scene for minor injuries. The driver was not identified in the release.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the State Police Catskill Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 845-344-5300. (Source: Hudson Valley Country)

Halloween Curfews in Effect Tonight and Saturday Across Several Dutchess Towns

With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, several Dutchess County communities are enforcing curfews on both Mischief Night, Friday, October 30, and Halloween itself. Hudson Valley Country published the details October 28. The rules vary meaningfully by town, and families should not assume one community's restrictions apply to another.

In the Town of Fishkill, anyone under 18 must be off public streets and other public areas between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. on October 30, 31, and November 1.

In the Town of Wappinger, a permanent Halloween curfew restricts minors under 18 from public areas between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. on October 30 and 31.

In the Town of Pleasant Valley, minors under 18 face a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on October 30 and 31. The town adopted its Halloween curfew law in 2008.

In the Town of Rhinebeck, children ten and younger must be off public streets by 8 p.m., while those ages 11 through 17 have until 11 p.m. Both restrictions remain in effect until dawn on November 1. Rhinebeck's law applies only to areas of the town outside the incorporated Village of Rhinebeck.

Many of these laws include exceptions for children accompanied by parents or guardians, employment, emergencies, and supervised activities. Because the rules vary from community to community, parents and guardians should check their own municipality's ordinances directly before heading out. (Source: Hudson Valley Country)

Charges are accusations; defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

No release dated October 30 was found from the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department, the Hyde Park Police Department, the Beacon Police Department, or the Fishkill Police Department.
