Rhinebeck's Fire Contract Heads to Public Hearing October 13
By June Mercer, RFTUV Hudson Valley
Town of Rhinebeck residents will have a chance to weigh in on a proposed new fire protection contract before the town board votes on it. The board set a public hearing for Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Rhinebeck Town Hall, 80 East Market Street. The hearing is open to the public.
The hearing was authorized by Resolution 2026-235 at the town board's regular meeting. The contract under consideration is the 2027 Fire Protection Contract with the Village of Rhinebeck.
What a Fire Protection Contract Is
The Town of Rhinebeck and the Village of Rhinebeck are separate municipal governments. The village operates its own fire department. Under a fire protection contract, the town pays the village to provide fire protection services to the town's fire protective district, which covers the parts of the town that lie outside the village boundaries.
For town residents outside the village, this contract shows up directly on their tax bills. The town's annual payment to the village funds the fire coverage those residents receive, which makes the contract one of the more tangible government agreements in their daily lives. It c/overs emergency response, not just structure fires: the Rhinebeck Fire Department responds to vehicle accidents, medical assists, and other calls within the district as well. When the contract is up for renewal, the terms are set by negotiation between the two boards. The town board has final authority to approve or reject a proposed agreement, which is why the public hearing is a required step.
How This Contract Came Together
Negotiations on this agreement ran for some time. The Village of Rhinebeck Board of Trustees listed "Fire Contract for Town Protective District" under Resolutions and Agreements on its September 8, 2026 meeting agenda. Around the same time, The Daily Catch, a local reader roundup, reported that the village and town had reached agreement on a new fire contract after a long negotiation.
The town board's scheduling of the October 13 public hearing is the next formal step. Under New York State law, certain municipal agreements require a public hearing before the governing board can vote to approve them. The hearing gives residents the opportunity to speak before the board acts

What to Expect at the Hearing
A public hearing is not a town hall debate. It is a structured opportunity for residents to comment on the record before the board votes. The board will open the hearing, take public comments, and close it. You do not need to register in advance to speak; residents typically give their name and address for the record, then deliver their comments. Written comments submitted to the town clerk before the hearing may also be entered into the record. After the hearing closes, the board can vote on the contract at a subsequent meeting or, depending on the agenda, the same night.
If you want to know the specific terms of the proposed 2027 contract, including the payment amount and contract length, the best move is to contact the town clerk's office before October 13 to request a copy, or ask for the document at the hearing itself. The town clerk's office can be reached through the town website or by visiting town hall at 80 East Market Street.
No contract figures have been formally published as of this writing.
