A special prosecutor has been appointed in a ballot fraud case in Rockland County. The case is against Aidan Rowan, 25, a local Republican operative, according to lohud. Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh recused himself from the matter. Julia D. Cornachio was named special district attorney.
Rowan leads the county's Young Republicans, lohud reported. His consulting business has contracted with Republican campaigns. He turned himself in to the Rockland County Sheriff's Office on November 4, the day after the general election. A warrant had been issued October 23 by Clarkstown Town Court.
Rowan was arraigned in Clarkstown Town Court on 12 felony counts. The charges include four counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, according to lohud. He also faces second-degree forgery and first-degree tampering with public records. Four counts of offering a false instrument for filing are included as well. Two counts of first-degree making an apparently false sworn statement complete the list. These are allegations. Rowan is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
The case involves four early mail voting ballots submitted under four people's names, lohud reported. The ballots appeared in the June 23 Stony Point Republican County Committee primary. Rowan was a candidate in that primary. The allegations do not involve the November 3 general election.
The investigation started after both Rockland Board of Elections commissioners filed a complaint, according to lohud. Sheriff Louis Falco III said no evidence emerged that another candidate, campaign, or elected official directed or participated in the alleged conduct.
Rowan was released on his own recognizance. No follow-up court date has been set. He ran unsuccessfully for Stony Point Town Board in 2021, at age 19, according to lohud.
